Niamatpur Upazila, Naogaon

Niamatpur Upazila (Bangla: নিয়ামতপুর উপজেলা) is a sub-district of Naogaon District in Rajshahi Division, Bangladesh. The upazila headquarters lies roughly 38 km southwest of Naogaon town and about 64 km northwest of Rajshahi city. The area extends over approximately 449.09 km² and includes 35,299 households.

Geographically, Niamatpur is positioned at around 24°51′30″ N latitude and 88°34′00″ E longitude. It is bordered by Porsha Upazila to the north, Tanore and Nachole Upazilas to the south, Manda and Mohadevpur Upazila to the east, and Gomastapur plus Nachole Upazila to the west.

Administration

The upazila is governed by one upazila parishad and 8 union councils (also known as parishad). It has 321 mouzas and 341 villages. The area falls within the electoral constituency of 46, Naogaon-01 (Mohadevpur–Badalgachhi).

Heritage of Niamatpur Upazila

The upazila hosts a historical Premgosai Mela (BN: প্রেমগোসাই মেলা) of Gujishahar. The vibrant village fair is held annually during Paush Sankranti. This age-old event draws large crowds from across the country and creates a festive atmosphere that lasts for an entire week.

As of the 2022 census, the literacy rate in the upazila is 72.63%, where the male literacy rate is 74.81% and the female literacy rate is 70.49%.

As of the 2022 census, the total population of Niamatpur Upazila is 270,452. Among them, 134,320 are male and 136,112 are female. The number of households is 73,528, with an average household size of 3.65 persons. The gender ratio stands at 98.68 males per 100 females. The annual population growth rate is 0.76%, with male growth at 0.81% and female growth at 0.70%.

Population by Religion

In Niamatpur Upazila, Muslims form the majority, comprising 78.24% of the total population. Hindus are the second-largest religious group at 18.56%. Christians represent 1.78%, while Buddhists make up 0.01%. The “Others” category includes 1.41% of the population.
